Cote d'Ivoire
Cote d'Ivoire, or the Ivory Coast is located in Africa just west of the Prime Meridian and just north of the Equator. The Ivory Coast also is bordered by the North Atlantic Ocean as well as Ghana, Liberia, Mali, and Burkina Faso. The first European country to land in the Ivory Coast was Portugal. The Portuguese, however, where not the only ones to find the rich Ivory Coast. The Dutch, Danish, French, and the English also went there for the resources. Even with all of these countries arguing for the territory, the French ended up taking over the country in the Berlin Conference. The French introduced taxation and "civilization" which led to many resistances among the indigenous people. When the French left and the country gained its independence in 1960, they wrote a formal constitution and made governmental groups.
The government type that the Ivory Coast now uses is a republic. They decided that they would also elect a president every five years. However there was and still is no limit to how many times one person can get re-elected. This idea of a president came around in 1960; the year they gained their independence from the French. Cote d'Ivoire has, like the U.S.A.,a judicial branch, a legislative branch, and political parties and leaders. All of these thing help to give the Ivory Coast a more stable government, however the will never totally be out of trouble. The Cote d'Ivoire is having a governmental crisis and it is internally affecting the nation. Even if this is resolved, the country will have to deal with people leaving the country and seeking refuge. The Ivory coast relied on trade and their economy and they still do. The Ivory Coast relies on agriculture and related activities to agriculture which includes about 68% of the countries population and people. This country is a major export of cocoa, oil, palm oil, coffee, and gold. The Ivory coast also exports Ivory.
